Beginner’s Guide to Flyboarding

If you enjoy water sports and spending time on the beach, you’ve probably heard of Flyboards, which have been around since 2012. Flyboards are the safer and easier version of jet packs, except that you wear them like a board and use them in marina parks or at the beach. They were invented and popularized by a French watercraft rider named Franky Zapata.

What is Flyboarding

A flyboard appears to be a board that allows you to fly over the waves rather than surf on them. It appears to be a hoverboard with a jetpack underneath. Simply put, it is a board that allows you to fly over water by using water.

Aside from the board, you’ll need something to push the water up, which is done by a personal watercraft. Once you’re up and running, you’ll need to practice keeping your balance and control. It is very fast and maneuverable, so it takes some practice before you can use it for fun.

How Does Flyboarding Work

A flyboard uses powerful water propulsion to lift you into the air, and it all starts with a Jet Ski. The board is connected to the Jet Ski through a long, high-pressure hose. This hose redirects water from the Jet Ski and pushes it down through nozzles located beneath your feet.

As the Jet Ski engine pumps water through the hose, the pressure creates enough force to lift the flyboard, and you, above the surface of the water. You can hover, rise up to 30–35 feet in the air, and even dive back into the water once you get the hang of it.

It may look complex, but the flyboard is surprisingly easy to control. With basic instructions, most beginners can start flying within minutes.

How Beginners Can Get Started Quickly

Learning to Flyboard is surprisingly quick, even for complete beginners. With clear guidance from a professional instructor, most people are able to lift off within the first 5 minutes in the water.

After about 20 minutes, you’ll likely be able to balance, control your direction, and enjoy the full experience. Some people catch on even faster, but nearly everyone has fun on their very first try.

The best part? Your second session usually feels twice as smooth. The more you practice, the more confident and comfortable you become on the flyboard, making each ride better than the last.

Flyboarding Is Safe with the Right Gear and Guidance

Flyboarding is generally considered as safe as other water sports, especially when done under professional supervision. Like any activity, it comes with some risk, but with proper training and equipment, those risks are minimal.

Before you step on a flyboard, you'll be equipped with essential safety gear:

  • Helmet protects your head during falls

  • Life jacket keeps you afloat and adds a layer of impact protection

  • Safety straps secure your feet to the board for better control

You don’t need to worry about falling off, you’re strapped in and always supported by the water beneath you. Most sessions begin with a short safety briefing, and your instructor will guide you throughout the ride to make sure you’re flying confidently and safely.

To stay safe:

  • Follow all instructions carefully

  • Stay relaxed and centered

  • Avoid sharp movements until you’re more experienced

While flyboarding isn't allowed at every beach, Dubai offers several licensed and regulated spots where you can enjoy the sport in a controlled environment.

Tips to Make the Most of Your First Flyboard Session

Trying a flyboard for the first time is both exciting and a little nerve-wracking, but with the right preparation, it can be an unforgettable experience. Here are a few essential tips to help you make the most of your first session on the water.

1. Wear the Right Gear

Comfort and safety start with what you wear:

  • Swimwear: Choose snug-fitting swimwear or a rash guard that won’t shift around in the water. Avoid anything loose or baggy.

  • Life Jacket & Helmet: These will be provided by your instructor. Make sure both fit securely before starting.

  • Avoid Accessories: Leave jewelry, watches, and anything that might fall off or get lost behind.

Optional: Some riders wear water shoes for a better grip, but they’re not required.

2. Get in the Right Mindset

Your attitude plays a big role in how quickly you pick up flyboarding.

  • Relax: It’s normal to feel unsure at first. Try to stay calm and focused, tension makes it harder to balance.

  • Listen Carefully: Pay close attention during your safety briefing. Instructors will show you how to move, rise, and correct your balance.

  • Be Patient: Don’t expect to master tricks on your first go. Learning to lift and balance is an achievement on its own.

Remember, the flyboard is designed for beginners, so let go of fear and enjoy the ride!

3. What to Expect in the First 10 Minutes

Your first few minutes will be all about getting a feel for the board:

  • At first, you’ll float in the water while the Jet Ski builds pressure.

  • As the water is pushed through the hose, you’ll slowly rise.

  • Expect a few wobbles; that’s completely normal. Most beginners fall a few times before getting steady.

  • Once you’re up, keep your legs straight and your body centered. Small movements control your direction.

By the 10-minute mark, most people are able to hover confidently and even make gentle turns. Your instructor will stay close, guiding you through every step.
