The first thing that might come to mind when you consider water sports is paddling, surfing, or kayaking. Try jet skiing instead if you’re looking for something completely different and exhilarating. Despite being comparatively new compared to some other watersports, this activity is still one of the most popular ones in Dubai. Continue reading to find out more about the fascinating history of this water sport.
Clayton Jobson and the Beginning
The phrase “jet ski” is actually a brand name, in case you didn’t know. These inventions were originally referred to as water scooters before being called jet skis. The first personal watercraft, or PWC, were known as water scooters.
American inventor Clayton Jacobson II is responsible for creating the first recognized PWC. Jacobson developed the concept by enhancing and extending the original models created in Europe in the 1950s. Any fan of water sports is probably familiar with the name Bombardier Sea-Doo, which is how Jacobson’s creation would eventually come to be known.
The Original Jet Ski
Although the Sea-Doo wasn’t initially produced in large quantities, its popularity quickly increased. To bring the Kawasaki JS400 Jet Ski to market, Jacobson partnered with the Japanese company Kawasaki. The phrase “jet ski” was first used here, and it caught on. The first commercially successful jet ski model was this one, which debuted in 1973 and quickly sold more than 200,000 units.
Naturally, other manufacturers produced their own jet skis after the JS400’s phenomenal success. Yamaha introduced the WaveRunner 500 in 1985, and Honda unveiled the AquaTrax the following year.
Over the following decade, jet skis’ features were improved, including the rider’s ability to sit rather than stand, which increased pilot stability. Jet Skis travel on water by shooting a powerful water jet after them. Numerous companies have released stand-up and sit-down personal watercraft over the years. Compared to standing models, sit-down models are used more frequently today.
A gasoline engine powers the vessel while water is drawn in through an intake grate on the bottom. The water pump is also powered by the engine, and the impeller, a pipe-mounted propeller that draws water in at one end and expels it at the other, keeps the engine from overheating.
