Personal Watercraft Safety: Do’s And Don’ts During Your Jet Ski Ride
Jan 15, 2021
Jet skiing is a thrilling water sport, and this sport is performed on a personal watercraft (PWC). This machine has specific methods of operation and there are certain instructions to be followed to ensure that you have a safe ride. The initial training sessions will be with a qualified expert who is certified to train you and acquaint you with the device. Once you are familiar with the guidelines and the usage, you can explore the waters by yourself.
Some of the basic do’s and don’ts of jet skiing include:
Wear a life jacket: Before you get on the Jet Ski and operate the machine, ensure you have a life jacket. Even if you are driving the Jet Ski, or riding with another person, you have to wear a Type 1, 2, or 3 life jacket when on enclosed water bodies like rivers or lakes, and a Type 1 or 2 life jacket when on open water bodies like oceans and seas. These life jackets are non-inflatable and will ensure maximum safety.
Safety lanyards: A safety lanyard is a key part of the Jet Ski and it is either attached to the rider’s wrist or life jacket, which is then connected to the Jet Ski. The safety lanyard operates when detached from the wrist or life jacket, and is responsible for shutting down the PWC when detached. The safety lanyard enables you to reboard a PWC, restart, and ride away to safety.
Speed: Make sure to ride at a safe speed. You may get lost in the thrill and accelerate beyond control, but this can lead to collisions or accidents. It is best to ride at an average pace in which you can comfortably control the PWC.
Check the weather: It is crucial to check the weather before going for a Jet Ski trip. Harsh weather conditions could cause rough waves, which are harder to ride on. This may also cause accidents; hence, it is safer to go jet skiing during ideal climatic conditions, when it is neither too warm nor too cold.
Inform someone: It is crucial to inform someone about your whereabouts before going out into the water. Make sure to tell them where you are heading and roughly how long you will be gone. This will help that person to take action in case you are not back by the time you had informed them.
Check over the Jet Ski: It is always a good habit to check over any machine before taking it out; the same applies to a Jet Ski. Make sure to inspect over your Jet Ski before heading out on the water. The correct way to inspect a Jet Ski is to get physical with the engine and try to lift it; after which you should ensure the Jet Ski is fully fuelled so that you can get going.
