Ways To Prevent Motion Sickness While Flyboarding

While many associate feelings of nausea with riding a jet ski at high speeds, the truth is even activities like flyboarding can present a risk. If there are two things guaranteed during a flyboarding session, they are speed and rapid movements, both of which can induce motion sickness. Symptoms vary between individuals, but it typically involves nausea, vomiting, and headaches. Feeling unwell during a flyboarding session can rob you of the excitement and thrill the activity offers, so to prevent this from happening, you need to avoid this condition by taking relevant measures.

Try your best to relax.

When you feel anxious and stressed before your flyboarding session, it will make you feel more nauseous and you’re more likely to be sick during the ride. Try some deep-breathing techniques that can help you stay relaxed. There are many simple breathing exercises that you can use, from counting while breathing to even thinking of more positive experiences. If you have never gone flyboarding before, consider speaking to someone who has done the activity, or to the instructor that will be guiding you and they will be able to give you pointers and tell you what to expect during the ride, which can help you feel more confident and prepared.

Avoid spicy or greasy food.

Before any ride that involves a lot of motion, it is essential to avoid greasy and spicy food. They tend to cause gastrointestinal issues and lead to an acid reflux mid-ride. Even excessively salty food is best avoided as it can make you dehydrated. Instead, opt for light snacks like crackers. Try to ensure that your meals on the day of the ride and the night before are light, so the probability of motion sickness significantly reduces.

Try not to mix your sensory cues.

Mismatch in visual (sight), vestibular (inner ear and balance), and proprioceptive (position and movement) signals often lead to motion sickness. When you flyboard, sensory conflicts can occur due to your positioning. You can avoid this issue by making it a point to fix your gaze ahead and refraining from closing your eyes or looking down. This ensures that the signals your brain receives from your eyes match the movement signals your inner ear is sending.

Give yourself a pep talk.

It may actually be possible to talk yourself out of feeling motion sickness. By using affirmative language such as “I won’t feel sick during the ride”, you will be able to convince your brain not to feel motion sickness. If you have difficulty doing so, you can use breathing techniques involving biofeedback to help you feel more confident. One easy method of biofeedback breathing is through keeping your shoulders erect, letting out a big sigh that makes sound as air leaves your mouth, and then repeating the process for 10 to 15 times consecutively.

Eat ginger

Some studies have found that ginger is effective against motion sickness. Though it is not proven, it is still a safe remedy you can try. You can easily obtain ginger root in pharmacies and stores in the form of candies and capsules, so simply take one for about 30 minutes before you start flyboarding. It is hypothesized that ginger stops nausea by preventing the formation of gastric dysrhythmias and the increase of plasma vasopressin.

Flyboarding is a fun and exciting activity, so to make sure you can enjoy it, consider taking the above measures to avoid motion sickness. If you want to flyboard or ride a jet ski in Dubai, contact us at Ride in Dubai for more information about our packages.
